The UCD School of Information and Library Studies is the only academic institution in Ireland to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes leading to research and professionally accredited qualifications in Information and Library Studies.
Undergraduate degree programmes in SILS provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge and skills that can be applied in many different careers, including Information Managers, Librarians, Information Systems Designers and Information Architects. It is possible to obtain a BA or BSocSci degree in either Information and Social Computing or Social Media (as part of the BSocSci degree).
The Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) and the Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (GradDipLIS) degrees are accredited by professional organizations and are internationally recognised in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The School also offers a MSc in Information Systems, which builds on research and teaching expertise at SILS that focuses on the interplay of people, information, technology and social structures, and is aligned with the Irish information technology sector. International students in this degree programme will have the opportunity to have an Irish experience, along with an international educational experience.
The School offers an MA, M Litt, and a PhD in Information Studies. Graduates find careers in industry, government, universities, industry and NGOs
Researchers within the School investigate how information is created, organized, searched, and shared within and across communities, organizations, and society, as well as in the everyday life of individuals. Research in SILS also examines the impact of new technologies (including social media) on the lives of individuals, communities and society.
